Schools play an essential role in educating students to be more socially aware and inclusive of diversity. Multicultural education helps students to aquire the knowledge, attitudes, and skills needed to transform society by increasing equity among all people. In addition, it supports a positive classroom climate for ALL students. The Attanasio and Associates Multicultural Libraries have been created to support multicultural education by providing students with books that:
- reflect the diverse backgrounds of most students.
- provide themes for making connections between cultures.
- compare and contrast traditions of long ago with those in practice today.
- feature folktales, fables, poems, and stories that were selected for use as read alouds, shared text, and independent reading.
- include titles written by Maya Angelou, Laurence Yep, Patricia Polacco, and other award-winning authors.
In order to motivate students to read, we must offer them books that will draw students in, books that create high interest and energy in the reader. The books in the Attanasio and Associates Multicultural Libraries encourage discussion among students with storylines that both captivate and challenge. Students will read for pleasure as well as information. We know that in reading, nothing succeeds like success! The more students read, the more they improve their skills and increase vocabulary and comprehension. Each library contains books that will engage the reader and promote a love of multicultural literature.
We encourage you to celebrate the values, cultures, and lives of all children through books! The Attanasio and Associates Multicultural Libraries are irresistible and students will find them hard to put down.
